This introductory course is essential learning for people who work, or would like to work, with children, adolescents and adults in the field of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy.

Held over four days, this course provides a comprehensive grounding in the core principles and skills of Orofacial Myology.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to identify myofunctional disorders and airways issues, diagnose tongue ties, treat thumbsucking, improve orthodontic outcomes and treat pain and range of motion issues with TMD patients.

Continuing and ongoing professional support is available to participants after completion of every Academy course.

The Australian Dental Association (NSW Branch) is proud to support the University of Newcastle’s B Oral Health Therapy (12390) program. This Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) lecture forms part of the mandatory pre-placement requirements for students moving forward to pass their degrees.

This lecture will focus on the key elements of managing COVID-19 risk while it remains in our community, which could be for some time yet, and reveal the top areas of opportunity to improve IPC processes based on performance-based data and insights gained as the peak body for the profession.

Developmental Defects of Enamel – What’s going on?

Dental records are not only a requirement by law [state and federal] but also assumed under Professional Standards. They are like house insurance – you really need them when there is a fire or flood [in dental cases when you have a claim or complaint] and they are what let dentists down when defending a claim or complaint.
There is an old legal saying:
‘Good records = good defence;
Poor records = no defence’.

• • At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Review the expected minimum standards the DBA has set and what may facilitate you meeting these standards
  • Identify common errors and omissions in record keeping

Ethics in dentistry: Just because I think I can, should I?

While dentists face technical and scientific questions each day, it is important to recognise how ethical questions play an integral part in providing quality treatment for patients in their care. These questions relate to the dentists’ values, rights and responsibilities, which affect their behaviour and decision-making process.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• • Recognise and deal with issues arising in the practise of dentistry in a rational and principled manner, whether dealing with patients, colleagues or society in general
  • Appreciate how the law relates to dental ethics

Module 1 – Patient Focussed Culture (2 hours)

• Exploring the purpose of a Patient Focussed Vision and Culture
• Understanding patient behaviours
• Shaping the practice systems and protocols through the eyes of the patient

Module 2 – The Patient Journey (2 hours)

• Identification of patient touch points that will optimise the patient journey
• “Walk of the Patient” – Creating an aligned and consistent experience at each touch point of the patient journey, incorporating protocols that will optimise the patient experience

Module 3 – Creating Patients for Life (2 hours)

• Five Phases for building loyal long-term loyal patient relationships
• Diagnostics to assist in identifying gaps and inconsistencies in the Patient Experience
• Equip the team with tools and processes that will empower them to avoid and solve problems during patient interactions

The online program is a total of three modules and will be delivered online via the ZOOM platform with chats, polls and breakout rooms to enhance engagement.

Each participant must complete these three modules to gain access to CPD points and certificates.

Gain or refresh your skills and knowledge in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), with an emphasis on emergencies occurring in the dental environment.

Learn the current guidelines from the Australian Resuscitation Council and the 2015 International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCoR) guidelines specific to dentistry.

Review the process to assess a sick or collapsed person receiving dental care, including:

• Management of an unconscious person
• Recognition and management of anaphylaxis and adrenaline auto-injector practical skills
• Use of an automated external defibrillator
• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills.

COVIDSafe practice for hands-on CPR component

• There will be sufficient manikins to have one manikin for two participants
• Each participant will have a new face on the manikin
• Participants will be asked to remove the used face, and the instructor (wearing gloves) will place a new face on the manikin
• Each participant will use a separate resuscitation mask and valve, and there will be a manikin face shield added for increased participant protection – exhaled air from the manikins exit through a side port and not back through the manikin’s mouth
• All equipment is cleaned before and after use
• Two-person CPR with rescue breaths will not be performed to maintain safe hygiene procedures. Rescue breaths will be performed singularly.

OVERVIEW

5 Day- Hands-On Patient Program (Patients provided)

Patients with full mouth complex issues and tooth wear are common in day to day practice. These cases can be daunting and take a lot of planning and precise execution of treatment.

This course is designed to take a look at these large cases from an overall diagnosis point of view. Attendees will meet with their patient (supplied by us) and then work to obtain all recordsneeded to plan their case.

Mounting and waxing up your case will help you understand your case. Attendees will perform afull arch of ceramic restorations or full mouth of direct composite depending on what you would prefer. We will source your patient based on your desired techniques. Full cementation and isolation techniques will be used to create a final, successful outcome for your patient.

2 Day- Hands-On Patient Program

OVERVIEW

Participants will spend a comprehensive two days learning case selection for extractions, when socket preservation is necessary, material choices and up to date protocols. We will cover techniques for performing atraumatic extractions and surgical primary suture closure, as well as immediate tooth replacement options before participants each, get the opportunity to perform multiple atraumatic, surgical extractions and socket preservation on patients provided by us.

• The latest on developments in key national documents including the Australian Standards, NHMRC Guidelines, CDNA guidelines, Immunize Australia guidelines, and the ACSQHC National Health Safety Standards.

• Structuring your practice infection control protocol to meet the Qld requirements for an Infection Control Management Plan.

MasterPrep is a two-day course focusing on practical skill development for tooth preparations in fixed prosthodontics.  This unique course will give the participant an opportunity to practice and learn clinically relevant points of tooth preparation.  MasterPrep caters for the use of a variety of dental products such as burs, handpieces, ultrasonics and dental materials in a non-biased environment. Emphasis will be placed on tools and techniques to prepare a tooth and effectively apply this to practice.  Clinical examples will be used to explain the techniques so that the skills can be applied as soon as you return to the clinic.

COURSE OVERVIEW

These courses provide approved training for the use of extra-oral irradiating apparatus and cone beam scanners and will provide candidates with the knowledge required to own and use extra-oral irradiating apparatus and cone beam scanners appropriately and safely in the State of Queensland.

In Queensland there is a legal requirement for dentists, oral health therapists and dental assistants with certificate IV (radiography) to have a use license for taking extra-oral radiographs and cone beam examinations.  To obtain a license from Radiation Health, candidates must complete a course of study to prove they are competent in the use of extra-oral irradiating apparatus and cone beam scanners. 

These courses will cover the:

• production of x-rays, the biological effects of x-rays and radiation hygiene
• theory and use of extra-oral irradiating apparatus and cone beam scanners
• limitations and advantages of extra-oral radiography and cone beam imaging
• applications of extra-oral radiography and cone beam imaging
• regulations relating to the Radiation safety Act of Queensland.

Lecture description:

The Intensive 1 day hands-on broken up in 2 for those who can’t participate in the full-day version.
This course is about Dental Photography in a new format with small groups for the most effective learning!
Live from Perth, from my lab. The whole course is covered with multiple cameras.
With this course, you can learn a coordinated approach to capture the best possible photographs with your camera and flashes for documentation and shade communication.
I’ll demonstrate and teach the photography protocol we use with Dr. Tony Rotondo since 2010.

• Camera basics and differences between cropped and full-frame formats
• Which gear is the best for you
• Calibration of your digital tools
• Use the different type of illuminations: point, diffused, reflected and
polarised
• Shade analysis through photographs for ceramic or composite layering

• How to take and edit photos for Instagram and Facebook!
