Overview

This online modular program aims to increase practitioners’ awareness of the effects of type 2 diabetes on patient’s oral health.

Type-2 diabetes is a common chronic disease in Australia, with an estimated one in four adults aged 25 years or over having either diabetes or a condition known as pre-diabetes (impaired glucose regulation). Diabetes has been associated with several oral complications and as we know oral health is integral to an individual’s overall health and quality of life.

Despite the importance of the link between diabetes and oral health, research demonstrates adults with diabetes have a low level of knowledge of this relationship and were often unaware of the need for stringent oral self-care. With an increasing global prevalence of pre-diabetes and type-2 diabetes, evidence supports opportunistic screening amongst high risk asymptomatic individuals.  The oral healthcare setting has been identified as an appropriate location for opportunistic screening for pre-diabetes and type-2 diabetes. Studies have found screening in the oral healthcare setting to be effective, and acceptable to patients and healthcare providers.

This course provides oral health professionals with the knowledge and tools to implement a Type2 diabetes screening protocol and referral pathway to patients GPs as part of standard practice as well as providing better care for patients who have been diagnose with pre-type 2 diabetes or type 2 diabetes.
