Even the most experienced practitioners experience disappointments – so how can you bounce back?

As clinicians, we are often our own worst critic. Due to the rise of social media, it can be tempting to buy into the notion that everyone is always producing perfect treatment. The truth is that we all experience failures from time to time. That includes even the most experienced practitioners. The ADA NSW Recent Graduates Committee is excited to again be running the “From Setbacks To Success webinar series in 2021. Join us as we explore how to overcome obstacles in various fields of dentistry and gain a renewed perspective on your clinical practice.

    Dr Agnes Lai

    Agnes obtained her Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Sydney in 2002, during which she was awarded the G.S CAIRD Scholarship in Prosthetic Dentistry and shared Faculty Research Prize.

    After practising as an intrepid general dentist in Singapore and metropolitan Sydney, Agnes completed her Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in Prosthodontics at her alma mater, the University of Sydney, and was admitted as a member in the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in the same year.

    Agnes has published her research in human neural adaptation related to an increase in occlusal vertical dimension using fMRI. She is also a contributor to the textbook “Oral Rehabilitation: A Case-Based Approach.” Agnes has also been involved with clinical research in implant rehabilitation in adolescence with severe forms of hypodontia.

    Currently, Agnes practises prosthodontics in private practices in Sydney, and also works as a clinical specialist at Westmead Oral Restorative Sciences Department.

    Agnes has been a past Lecturer of Oral Rehabilitation at the University of Sydney where she was involved in both undergraduate and post-graduate teaching of prosthodontics and dental implants. She was a presenter, and later course convener for Extended Fixed Prosthodontics 1, a 5-day program at Sydney Dental School from 2014-2019. She currently maintains an ongoing Clinical Educator role in the discipline of prosthodontics with Sydney Dental School.

    Agnes served as the federal secretary to the Australian Prosthodontic Society in 2013-15. She has served as NSW Councilor of the Academy of Australian and New Zealand Prosthodontics since 2016, and is an examiner for the DClinDent Prosthodontic Programs in Australia and New Zealand. She is a member of the Australian Dental Association, the International College of Prosthodontics and the International Team of Implantology.

    Her extensive experience in general and specialist practice, locally and overseas, and her friendly approach to patient care provide patients with the highest quality specialist prosthodontic treatment in a warm, caring manner. Her passion in prosthodontics sparks genuine interest in the hearts of early career dentists.
