Course Outline:

This crash course is intended in the first place to freshen up dentists’ and dental auxiliaries’ knowledge on intraoral and extraoral radiographic techniques that can be useful in daily dental practice.

Both 2D and 3D imaging will be discussed and examples will be provided throughout the entire course. Information regarding radiation doses and how to put these into perspective with daily natural background radiation and how to answer patient questions about radiation safety and potential radiation risks will also be addressed.

The last part of the day will be dedicated to an interactive session on radiographic interpretation.

The participants will be able at the end of the day:

  • To answer questions about radiation doses.
  • To apply the knowledge provided on radiographic techniques in their clinic.
  • To demonstrate their knowledge regarding radiographic interpretation.

  • Associate Professor Johan Aps

    Associate Professor Johan Aps

    Dr, DDS, MSc, PhD UGent MSc DMFR Lond.

    Associate Professor Johan Aps earned his dental degree (1993), his certificate in Paediatric Dentistry (1997) and his PhD (2002), from the Ghent University in Belgium. His PhD research was on cystic fibrosis, which made him interested in imaging salivary glands, and lead to him pursuing dental and maxillofacial radiology.
    In 2008 he obtained a master’s degree in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology at the University of London, in Great Britain.

    He has previously worked in Belgium both as private practitioner (1993-2004) and as an academic (Ghent University, 1993 – 2012). In July 2012 Johan moved to the USA, where he worked as Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Washington. In January 2018 he moved to Perth and is currently employed as Associate Professor, Discipline Lead for DMFR and Divisional Head of Oral Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences at the University of Western Australia, Dental School.

    Johan has published several peer reviewed papers, book chapters and is the author of “Imaging in Paediatric Dental Practice”.
