Practical Radiography in Dental Practice

Event Details

Accurate radiographs are essential to make a correct diagnosis, deliver positive treatment outcomes, assess long-term results and provide medico-legal protection.
This course will look at the opportunities and challenges of 2D and 3D imaging. Conventional 2D images remain the mainstay of dental treatment with film, digital sensors or phosphor plate options. Digital systems used correctly reduce radiation exposure and the need for manual processing of traditional film. This course will use two holders that operate across all 2D platforms and give you the results you need and want, including one of the most difficult procedures, an accurate endodontic image with rubber dam in place. The objective of this part of the course is to demonstrate simple clinical techniques to achieve this aim for all teeth and under all clinical situations.

Topics include

• What is the definition of a high-quality 2D image?
• 2D positioning techniques for all teeth
• Conventional film versus digital; pros and cons
• Advances in diagnosis and treatment planning with cutting-edge technologies
• 3D imaging pros and cons
• Interpretation of CBCT images: how to use generic imaging software to maximum advantage
• Which 3D imaging system suits my surgery?

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course participants will know how to:
• Successfully image any part of the mouth
• Deal with difficult situations such as gagging
• Correct procedural errors by applying a standard formula
• Apply the “buccal object rule” in both the horizontal and vertical planes
• Successfully undertake endodontic “working” films with rubber dam
• Rapidly process conventional x-ray film in 40 seconds that are of lasting quality
• Assess the clinical benefits of digital versus phosphor systems
• Understand the medico-legal implications of 3D imaging
• Identify pathology and artefacts in 2D and 3D images
• Enhance the interpretation of 3D imaging
• Identify pathology and artifacts in 2D and 3D images
• Understand the medico-legal implications of 3D imaging

    Specialist Endodontist

Dr Steven Cohn AM is a specialist endodontist in Sydney. Steve has taught undergraduate and postgraduate endodontics at the University of Sydney and Westmead Hospital since 1979 and is the former Director of Postgraduate Endodontic Education at the University of Sydney. In 1998 Steve started the first microscope training courses for endodontists in Australia. In the last 10 years Dr Cohn has run more courses for CED than any other educator. Since 2009 Steve, Dr Rick Spencer and Ms Barbara Faulkner have conducted microscope courses for general practitioners. These courses have continued annually since 1998 and 2009 respectively. Steve also does hands on microscope training on an individual basis in dentist’s rooms on request. Dr Cohn also presents “hands on“ clinics on rubber dam utilisation with Dr Rick Spencer and Ms Barbara Faulkner emphasising rubber dam application in both endodontics and general practice. Steve has also made a rubber dam training video for the ADA (NSW Branch) CPD. Dr Cohn has also maintained a long interest in dental radiology. He was a consultant to the Dunvale and Rinn corporations and assisted with developing both the Rinn DS and DS Endo devices. He solely designed both the Snapex (1979) and TruView (2017) radiography systems, both specifically designed to be used with all endodontic and restorative procedures carried out under rubber dam. Steve regularly conducts “hands on” radiology workshops throughout Australia. Until recently Dr Cohn was a Federal ADA Media Advisor responsible for the development and delivery of educational content for the dental profession.
