Special considerations of periodontal diagnostics, treatment and prevention in children and adolescents

Children and adolescents are subject to several periodontal diseases. Periodontal diseases in children and adolescents can be aggressive or with a severe systemic background. Therefore, early diagnosis and immediate and appropriate treatment are of paramount importance.

The aim of this course is to discuss and outline periodontal diagnosis, prognosis, treatment structure, maintenance and prevention in children and adolescent patients.

    Associate Professor Axel Spahr

    Specialist Periodontist

    A/Prof. Spahr is the former Head of Periodontics at the University of Ulm in Germany and has worked at various international universities and research facilities. He has a further training in microbiology and molecular biology and extensive experience in basic science research, animal research and clinical research. A/Prof. Spahr?s research interest includes periodontal regeneration, bone regeneration, periodontitis and systemic diseases as well as antimicrobial therapy.He has lead large externally funded research projects and is collaborating with leading international research groups and companies in the field of periodontology, implantology and bone regeneration. He is author of numerous publications in international peer-reviewed dental and medical journals and has presented his work on professional conferences worldwide

    Dr Soni Stephen BDS MDS Paed.Dent(Adel) FRACDS MRACDS(Paed.Dent) FICD FADI is a specialist paediatric dentist and maintains a specialist private practice in Miranda NSW. He is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at University of Sydney and was Head of Paediatric Dentistry at Sydney Dental Hospital from 2000 – 2015. Dr Stephen completed his paediatric training from the University of Adelaide and spent a number of years at Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne before moving to Sydney. Dr Stephen is a Fellow of Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and an examiner for both Membership and Special stream examinations. He is also a Fellow of the International College of Dental Surgeons and Academy of Dentistry International. Dr Stephen has a special interest in management of dentoalveloar trauma and children with medical, behavioural issues and those with special needs. He has lectured extensively both locally and internationally is active in both local and international.
