Event Details

Periodontal flap surgery very often follows a course of scaling and root-planning. It aims to improve access and visibility of persisting deep pockets allowing better debridement and leads to improved periodontal health.

This one-day course is aimed at general practitioners wishing to enhance their clinical and surgical skills and increase confidence in undertaking this procedure. The emphasis of this course is on practical techniques for use on their own patients and what outcomes can be expected.

The course consists of lectures followed by a laboratory component in which participants will undertake surgical procedures on animal heads. Theory, indications, rationale and techniques will be covered in the lectures, while the practical part will cover flap design and elevation plus regeneration.

    Dr Susan Wise

    Masters of Dental Science (Periodontics)

    Dr Susan Wise graduated as a dentist from The University of Melbourne in 1994. She worked as a general dentist for 5 years in Victoria before moving to Brisbane in 2000. Susan studied periodontics at the University of Queensland and was awarded a Masters of Dental Science (Periodontics) in 2002. She moved to Sydney in 2003 and worked as a specialist periodontist and returned to Melbourne in 2005 to set up her own specialist practice in periodontics in McKinnon. Susan has been a demonstrator for and examined undergraduate students and postgraduate students in periodontics. Susan is a Past President of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Society of Periodontology President of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Dental Association.

    Professor Ivan Darby

    BDS PhD Glas, FRACDS (Perio)

    Prof Darby is the current Head of Periodontics and is responsible for the school's specialization program in Periodontics, DClinDent(Perio). In addition, he also has involvement in the Grad Dip Clin Dent (implants), DDS, BDSc and BOH periodontics and implant surgery components. Ivan is also Director of Postgraduate Research and Education and Head of Population Oral Health & Periodontics. He also practices as a Periodontist in Moonee Ponds. Ivan is a past President of the ANZ division, Periodontal Research Group and Asia Pacific Region of the IADR. He is also Editor of the ASP journal, Periodontology.
