A sheep in wolf’s clothing: The challenges to assessing oral mucosal disease

Presented by Dr Jonathan Tversky

The evaluation of a patient with oral mucosal disease can be complex and challenging. Determining whether the problem is self-limiting or worrisome needs to be determined early in the process as this will dictate when referral is required. Jonathan will highlight a range of commoner conditioning that need to be considered.

New classification scheme for periodontal and peri‐implant diseases and conditions

Presented by Dr Fiona Chan

Receive an overview of the 2017 classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions, and key changes from the 1999 classification. For the first time, a definition for periodontal health has been introduced, and a new staging and grading system for the classification of periodontitis has been adopted. In addition, case definitions for peri-implant health and disease have been outlined. This presentation will demonstrate the implementation of the new classification scheme for periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions.

  • Apply the classification framework for periodontitis based on the new staging and grading system
  • Understand the new classification for peri-implant health, peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis

Oral pain

Presented by Dr Amrita Gokhale

Pain is the principal feature of Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) and the single most important reason for seeking care. TMD is a psychophysiological disorder with the psychological-physical interface being key to the presentation of TMD symptoms, their severity and responsiveness to treatment, with psychosocial factors such as stress, anxiety, and depression having a profound influence. Understand the Axis II constructs that play a role in chronic pain conditions like TMD.

    Dr Amrita Gokhale

    Specialist- Oral Medicine

    Dr. Amrita Gokhale is a registered Oral Medicine Specialist. Dr Gokhale completed postgraduate training in Oral Medicine at The University of Melbourne prior to which she worked as a general dentist in both public and private dental practices. Dr Gokhale’s research interest is pain education for the management of chronic orofacial pain and Temporomandibular Disorders.

  • Dr Fiona Chan

    Dr Fiona Chan

    BDSc, DClinDent (Perio)

    Dr Fiona Chan is a compassionate, vibrant dentist who attained a Bachelor of Dental Science with Honours from the University of Queensland. Her holistic approach to integrated patient treatment places special emphasis on minimal intervention dentistry and preventative oral health regimes. Fiona’s participation in the Oral Inflammation and Atherosclerosis Research Program at the Prince Charles Hospital led to her thesis aimed at establishing the role of periodontal disease as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. As the recipient of a Colgate Travel Grant, she presented her research at the 2010 IADR Australia and New Zealand meeting. Aside from periodontics, Fiona is also passionate about other aspects of dentistry, including aesthetic fillings and crowns.

  • Dr Jonathan Tversky

    Dr Jonathan Tversky

    B.D.S. (Adel.), M.D.Sc. (Melb.), F.R.A.C.D.S., F.O.M.A.A., F.A.D.I

    Dr Jonathan Tversky is a Specialist in Oral Medicine, with over 25 years’ experience in this discipline. Jonathan is a Senior Fellow at The Dental School, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Melbourne and is Specialist at The Oral Mucosal Clinic, Skin & Cancer Foundation. Previously, he held specialist appointments in Oral Medicine at Alfred Hospital, The Royal Melbourne Hospital and The Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne. Jonathan completed his BDS at The University of Adelaide. When working at Westmead Hospital Sydney, he developed an interest in Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain. He moved to Melbourne, where he undertook a specialist training program in Oral Medicine at the University of Melbourne, gaining his M.D.Sc. (Oral Medicine & Oral Pathology) in 1986. Since then, he has been in full-time restricted and then specialist private practice. Jonathan has lectured on a range of Oral Medicine & Orofacial Pain-related topics to general and specialist dental practitioners, as well as to general and specialist medical practitioners. These have included Dermatologists, Rheumatologists, Allergists, Gastroenterologists, Specialist General and Respiratory Physicians and Ear Nose & Throat Surgeons.
