This symposium will bring Head and Neck specialists, Medical and Radiation Oncologists together to discuss the latest developments in Head & Neck Cancer diagnosis, treatment and research with a focus on cancers of the oral cavity.

The purpose of the symposium is to provide primary health care providers, that being general dental practitioners, with practical information regarding the identification, investigation and initial management of malignant and premalignant lesions of the oral cavity. Additional information will be provided about the treatment of advanced oral cancer from specialists in head and neck surgery, reconstruction, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and the complications that may arise following these therapies.

    Associate Professor Carsten Palme

    Head and Neck Surgeon and Clinical Associate Professor in Surgery at the University of Sydney

    Associate Professor Carsten Palme Associate Professor Carsten E Palme is an Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgeon and Clinical Associate Professor in Surgery at the University of Sydney. A/Prof Palme holds clinical appointments at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Westmead Hospital, Sydney. He is also a visiting medical officer at Westmead Private Hospital, Macquarie Private Hospital and Norwest Private Hospital.

    After attending medical school at the University of Sydney A/Prof Palme completed four years of advanced training in Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery and obtained his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2002.

    Dr Hubert Low

    Otolaryngologist

    Dr Hubert Low is an Otolaryngologist, Head and Neck Surgeon with interest in microvascular/ head and neck reconstruction and management of facial nerve disorder.

    Dr Low is a member of the Australasian Head and Neck Society, the Australasian Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He has completed international fellowships in Western Australia, Taiwan and Canada. He is a senior clinical lecturer at Sydney and Macquarie Universities and actively supervises otolaryngology registrars, head and neck fellows, as well as post graduate research candidates.

    Dr Low currently chairs the Sydney Facial Nerve service, the first multidisciplinary clinic dedicated to the management of facial nerve disorder in Australia. He also manages the Head and Neck Database, which is currently the largest clinicopathological database dedicated to head and neck malignancies in the

    Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

    Dr Lydia Lim is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in private specialist practice in Chatswood. She is a graduate of Sydney University and completed her Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training in Sydney obtaining the MDSc and FRACDS(OMS) qualifications. She then furthered her training in the United States at the University of Texas at Houston. Lydia is currently a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at Westmead Hospital where she is involved with teaching surgical registrars and managing maxillofacial trauma. She also has special interest in complex dental implantology and orthognathic surgery.

    Dr Sue-Ching Yeoh Sue is an Oral Medicine Specialist, and maintains a specialist private practice Sydney. She has appointments at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse. Sue is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (General and Special Fields Stream); and the International College of Dentists. She is the President-Elect of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia. Sue is a member of the ADA Therapeutics Committee and has contributed to the Therapeutic Guidelines: Oral and Dental V3 (2019).

    Dr Suma Sukumar completed her undergraduate training in Adelaide and has completed her postgraduate specialist training in the field of Oral Medicine in Sydney. She currently works as a conjoint Staff Specialist in Oral Medicine (Westmead Centre for Oral Health) and Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney. She is involved in clinical and academic teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate dental students as well as mentoring junior dentists in the dental management of complex medical patients and mucosal pathology.

    She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and an invited Examiner in Pathology for the Primary examination as well as Oral Medicine for the Final Section of the General Stream. Suma is a Fellow of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia of which she sits on the Education and Scientific Subcommittee.

    Professor Jonathan Clark

    Consultant Positions in Head and Neck Surgery

    Professor Clark holds consultant positions in Head and Neck Surgery at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and Royal Prince Alfred hospitals and is a conjoint Clinical Professor at the University of Sydney. He is the Director of head and neck cancer research at the Sydney Head and Neck Cancer Institute (SHNCI) and head and neck research lead at the Royal Prince Alfred Institute of Academic Surgery (RPA-IAS). He was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2019 for his contribution to head and neck surgery and was appointed a Master Surgeon by the International Federation of Head and Neck Oncological Societies (IFHNOS). He has over 220 peer review publications, particularly in the fields of head and neck cancer genomics, metastatic skin cancer, oral cancer, facial reconstruction and patient education. He is a founding member Sydney Facial Nerve Service and Chairman of Beyond Five, Australia’s head and neck patient education website.
