Event Details

This course aims to refresh and update your knowledge on the use of local anaesthesia. It is designed for dental practitioners who have foundation knowledge and skills in administering local anaesthesia in the dental environment. It is not suitable to expand the scope of practice of clinicians who have not previously trained in local anaesthesia.

Local anaesthetics are the most commonly used drugs in dentistry. They are used in the prevention and management of pain during dental procedures. The anaesthetic agent used and the technique employed can have a significant impact on the comfort of the patient during clinical procedures.

This full-day program combines seminar and practical components to review local anaesthetic agents, local anaesthesia techniques and the management of local and systemic complications associated with local anaesthesia. The hands-on component includes preparing and administering infiltration and inferior alveolar nerve block injections.

Please note: course participants will practice injection techniques on each other

  • Select appropriate local anaesthetic agent, dependent upon patient’s medical history
  • Administer maxillary and mandibular injections
  • Manage local anaesthesia-related medical emergencies

  • Dr Aovana Timmerman

    Dr Aovana Timmerman

    BDSc(Melb), DCD(Melb), FRACDS, GCertClinTeach

    Dr Aovana Timmerman obtained her Bachelor of Dental Science from the University of Melbourne in 2001, then her fellowship with Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in 2011 before completing her endodontic specialist training at the University of Melbourne in 2016. She currently practices part-time in endodontics at Collins Street Specialist Centre in Melbourne and is also a lecturer in Endodontics for the DDS Endodontic Program at the University of Melbourne. She has published papers in Australian and international journals and is actively involved with research.

  • Dr Clare McNally

    Dr Clare McNally

    Dr Clare McNally completed her Assoc Degree in Dental Hygiene at Curtin University in 2000. She started at The University of Sydney as a lecturer in Bachelor of Oral Health in 2006 and completed her Master of Philosophy (Dentistry) at Sydney in 2012. Clare is in the final stages of her PhD at the University of Adelaide’s Adelaide Medical School and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Her project is titled: The oral health of hospitalised older inpatients. In 2018 Clare joined The University of Melbourne, Melbourne Dental School, as a Lecturer of Oral Health.

    Dr Lara DeAngelis

    Dr Lara DeAngelis has worked in private, hospital and public dentistry sincegraduating in 2010 and is currently employed in the Oral Medicine Clinic at the RoyalDental Hospital of Melbourne. She is currently undertaking a combined Doctor ofClinical Dentistry and PhD degree in Oral Medicine at the University of Melbourne.Dr DeAngelis also currently works as a casual lecturer and demonstrator for theMelbourne Dental School.
