Event Details
This course is designed to provide an understanding of contemporary orthodontic and dentofacial orthopaedic principles and develop the skills in recognising developing malocclusions. The scope of treatment and appliances that could be part of general practice will be included. The management of various types of malocclusions will be discussed during treatment planning seminars. The practical component of the course is designed to provide an introduction to the appropriate placement of fixed appliances. Course participants will be encouraged to participate in treatment planning seminars and bring records of patients from their own practices for assessment and evaluation.
Major Topics
An understanding of the key role of growth in orthodontic treatment
- An understanding of the complexity of issues affecting orthodontic treatment planning
- The benefits of interdisciplinary treatment for adults and children
- An understanding of the risks of orthodontic treatment
- Orthodontic management of severely compromised molars due to hypomineralisation
- Orthodontic and sleep disordered breathing
- An understanding of the importance of appropriate bracket placement and arch wire selection (using simulative wax-based typodonts)
Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this course, participants should have an improved understanding of:
- treatment planning
- diagnosis, cephalometric assessment
- treatment timing
- growth and development, early treatment, functional appliances
- extraction and non-extraction treatment, including non-compliance mechanics
- appropriate bracket placement and arch wire selection
- adult and interdisciplinary cases, including periodontics and orthognathic surgery
- risks of treatment
- retention, stability and the fate of third molars

Dr Amanda Leen graduated from dentistry and spent 5 years in the Army as a dental officer. Amanda then returned to the University of Melbourne to specialise as an orthodontist. Her thesis was a clinical investigation of hypomineralised teeth in orthodontic patients. Amanda now divides work time between a large orthodontic practice in Geelong and small multi-disciplinary specialist practice in Ballarat. She also worked in the public sector treating patients and teaching dental students at the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne. Amanda loves the aesthetic and transformative nature of orthodontics, as well as the long-term relationships built with patients and their families. She also enjoys the strong multidisciplinary nature of many orthodontic cases and the ability to reduce the restorative burden for the long-term by closing spaces of missing or damaged teeth.

Dr Andrei Locke completed his BDSc(Hons) in 1999 and MDSc(Perio) in 2004 at Melbourne Uni. He was an ITI Scholar in Bonn, Germany, returned to Melbourne in 2005 and works in private Specialist Periodontics rooms in Glen Iris. He consults in Shepparton, is a Senior Consultant at Monash Medical Centre and clinical demonstrator and past examiner for the Post-Graduate Periodontics course at Melbourne University. He has particular interest in the influence of tissue biotype on soft tissue surgery, bone grafting and implant surgery.

Dr Averil Tse completed her Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the University of Otago, graduating with Distinction in 2001. Averil then worked in both the public and private sectors in Auckland, New Zealand, until 2006. Averil came to Melbourne to undertake her postgraduate specialist training in Endodontics at the University of Melbourne, obtaining a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in 2009. Averil works in specialist private practice in the Melbourne CBD on Collins St. Averil is the immediate past-President of the Australian Society of Endodontology (VIC branch). In addition, Averil is involved with teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, at the Dental Schools at the University of Melbourne and La Trobe University in Bendigoand has lectured for the ASE (Inc.), ADA (Vic Branch) and University of Melbourne CPD courses.

She was awarded the Postgraduate Clinical Award as the graduating orthodontic student with the best treated case in Australia before qualifying for membership with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in the specialist field of orthodontics. In addition to her private practice work in Bundoora and North Balwyn, Katherine teaches orthodontics to Oral Health students at the University of Melbourne.

Dr Vicki Vlaskalic received both her Bachelor of Dental Science and Master of Dental Science degrees at the University of Melbourne, Australia. As recipient of the Australian Society of Orthodontists’ Sam Bulkley research fellowship, she spent 2 years teaching and researching at UCLA and then travelled to San Francisco where she became Assistant Professor at the University of the Pacific. In 1997, Dr. Vlaskalic acted as co-investigator with Professor Robert Boyd in the original feasibility study of the Invisalign appliance, becoming one of the first orthodontists in the world to develop and use the system. Together, they authored the first article on Invisalign in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, 2000. During her 6 years at Pacific, Dr. Vlaskalic received several awards, including 3 from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation. Aside from Invisalign, Dr. Vlaskalic is published in topics including measurement of orthodontic outcomes and root resorption, as well as presenting abstracts and papers at IADR and international orthodontic meetings. She has been instrumental in the introduction of Invisalign into many countries, including the USA, Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, China and more recently Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Since returning to Melbourne, Dr. Vlaskalic works in her orthodontic specialty practice as an Invisalign Platinum Provider and as a clinical instructor at the University of Melbourne where she collaborates with students and faculty researching various aspects of the Invisalign System. James worked in private practice in Brighton and held positions as Senior Dentist at a major rural hospital, Goulburn Valley Health, and lecturer at The University of Melbourne’s Rural Health Academic Centre. Following this he completed his specialist training in Orthodontics at the University of Melbourne.
