Immediate management for trauma to the permanent dentition in the paediatric patient

 

Synopsis: One-quarter of all adolescents will experience dental trauma, and these situations are never anticipated or scheduled in the dental clinic. This webinar will cover systematic decision systems for immediate management of various types of injuries to the permanent dentition and soft tissues, and when to refer.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply classification of dental injuries in the permanent  dentition

  • Differentiate between treatment types and time-sensitive management

    factors of various injuries to the permanent dentition and soft tissues

  • Determine the appropriate immediate management of these injuries

    Dr Carrie Tsai

    Carrie completed her undergraduate degree in Sociology at University of California, Berkeley, her dental degree at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in conjunction with her MPH at the Harvard School of Public Health (2010), where she was awarded an American Association of Public Health Dentistry Student Merit Award. Carrie then went on to complete her specialty program in Paediatric Dentistry at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF, 2013), and was concurrently accepted into the UCSF Global Health Sciences Clinical Scholars Program. She received funding to complete a health policy research thesis, for which she was recognised with a Graduate Research Award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). During this time, Carrie also received funding and a Student Achievement Award in Global Oral Health for work on global nutrition and oral health programs in Nepal and Honduras.

    Carrie worked as an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF as well as in private practice in the United States (both Seattle and San Diego) before moving to Australia. Carrie is currently a lecturer at the University of Sydney, School of Dentistry where she coordinates the paediatric dentistry curriculum as well as mentors student research projects. Carrie is also a dental specialist at the Department of Paediatric Dentistry at Sydney Dental Hospital and cares for paediatric patients in private practice in Hornsby and Chatswood.

    Prosthodontist, BDS(Syd) GradDipClinDent(Oral Implants)(Syd) MDSc(Pros)(Syd) FPFA FICD

    Ken is a dental specialist with dual qualification in prosthodontics and implant dentistry. Clinical services in his Miranda and Sydney private practices comprise all facets of prosthodontics including implant, aesthetic and reconstructive dentistry. His professional career spans 26 years and has included roles in general and specialist private practice in Sydney CBD, metropolitan and NSW regional locations. He has also held public and private hospital appointments.

    Between 2005-19, he held multiple roles within Sydney Dental School (undergraduate, postgraduate implants and prosthodontic programs, and professional education), Charles Sturt University and James Cook University (postgraduate implant programs).

    He is is an Executive Member of the Scientific and Continuing Professional Development Committee, Academy of Australia and New Zealand Prosthodontists (2016-), is Past Federal President of the Australian Prosthodontic Society (2013-15), and previously held executive membership with Continuing Education in Dentistry, Sydney Dental School (2011-19), including a five year term as its final Chair.
