Oral Medicine and General Dentistry

An overview of contemporary oral medicine for the general dental practitioner with emphasize on practical implications in the dental setting. The workshop will include presentations, case-based discussions and interactive activities

Topics include

Key topics will include oral manifestation in systemic diseases, considerations in dental treatment for cancer patients, management of oral complications in cancer patients, and more.

Learning Objectives

• Increase awareness of oral manifestations for systemic diseases.

• Ascertain the principles of dental management of cancer patients.

  • Dr Anastasia Georgiou

    Dr Anastasia Georgiou

    Consultant in Oral Medicine at Westmead Centre for Oral Health and as a Clinical Lecturer for the University of Sydney

    Dr Anastasia Georgiou graduated with Bachelor Degree of Dental Surgery from The University of Adelaide and subsequently, a Masters of Dental Science (Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology) from The University of Sydney. She has worked as a Consultant in Oral Medicine at Westmead Centre for Oral Health and as a Clinical Lecturer for the University of Sydney. She currently consults in private practice at Sydney.

    Anastasia is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of the Dental Surgeons and the International College of Dentists She is also a member of the European Association of Oral Medicine. She is the current President of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia.

    Dr Sharon Elad

    Professor and Chair of the Division of Oral Medicine at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA.

    Dr. Sharon Elad, DMD MSc is the Professor and Chair of the Division of Oral Medicine at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA. Additionally, she is the Principal Consultant for Hospital Dentistry at the Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center. She is the head of several courses for residents and students related to oral medicine and dental management of medically complex patients.

    Dr. Elad is the Chair of the MASCC/ISOO Mucositis Study Group. Previously she served as the Secretary of the ISOO and was the lead in the development of a position paper by MASCC/ISOO and EBMT about oral care for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Also Dr. Elad is also the section head for GVHD and for Viral Infections within the MASCC/ISOO Oral Care Study Group.

    Dr. Elad has performed as the principle investigator of several studies, including multi-central multi-national studies, mostly in the fields of oral medicine, hematology, oncology and dental management of medically complex patients.

    Dr. Elad is among the select few who have received the Honorary Diplomate Award from the American Board of Oral Medicine.

    Dr Suma Sukumar

    conjoint Staff Specialist in Oral Medicine (Westmead Centre for Oral Health) and Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney

    Dr Suma Sukumar completed her undergraduate training in Adelaide and has completed her postgraduate specialist training in the field of Oral Medicine in Sydney. She currently works as a conjoint Staff Specialist in Oral Medicine (Westmead Centre for Oral Health) and Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney. She is involved in clinical and academic teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate dental students as well as mentoring junior dentists in the dental management of complex medical patients and mucosal pathology.

    She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and an invited Examiner in Pathology for the Primary examination as well as Oral Medicine for the Final Section of the General Stream. Suma is a Fellow of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia of which she sits on the Education and Scientific Subcommittee.
