Course overview

This course provides an overview of key areas in infection prevention and control in which there have been significant changes in the past year, and provides up to date information on coronavirus infections and viral influenza.

The course covers areas where changes have occurred in Australian standards, NHMRC 2019, Hand Hygiene Australia, CDNA 2018, and provides a structured approach to implementing key aspects of these new protocols. Attending this course will help attendees to be compliant with the latest guidelines.

  • Disease trends for infectious diseases of concern to dentistry
  • Risk-based precautions
  • Recent developments in handcare practices
  • Performance assessment of dental masks and respirators
  • Comprehensive sharps injury protocol and post-exposure prophylaxis
  • Biofilm reduction strategies and microbial assessment of dental unit water
  • Simplified management of endodontic instruments
  • Efficiency-based measures to improve workflow in instrument reprocessing and patient changeover
  • Features and correct operation of pre-vacuum autoclaves
  • Batch identification of instruments (instrument tracking)
  • Analysis of failures in infection control – lessons from recent incidents of practice
  • Requirements for autoclave record keeping
  • Protocols for the use of chemical and biological indicators

This 6 hour course is comprised of a series of short videos, grouped by themes as shown below. The first theme of the course presents a series of lectures summarising where the major changes have been over recent years. The information presented in all the videos draws on the current infection control guidelines.

    Professor Laurence Walsh

    BDSc (Hons) (Qld), DDSc (Qld), PhD (Qld), GCEd, FFOP (RCPA), FICD, FADI, FPFA, FIADFE

    Professor Walsh is a specialist in special needs dentistry who holds a personal chair in Dental Science at the University of Queensland. He is a clinically active specialist in special needs dentistry and has a particular clinical interest in medically compromised patients. Laurie has lectured nationally and internationally on issues with the provision of dental care to elderly and frail patients, and has contributed to the development of care protocols based on minimal intervention dentistry. Laurie has served as an infection control consultant to a range of government and private sector organisations.
