Course Outline:

Oral surgery started with much blood and guts; as Hippocrates put it, ‘’war is the only proper school for a surgeon’’. Traumatic injuries in the World Wars necessitated many surgical procedures, including oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Course Topics:

This course covers basic oral surgery principles, to refresh upon aspects including:

  • Brief outline on patient assessment
  • Setting up for exodontia surgery

Practical aspects of:

  • Extraction
  • Surgical – flap design and how to raise a flap
  • Management of complications
  • Odontogenic infection and draining a dental abscess

    Dr Frank Chang

    Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

    Dr Frank Chang is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with degrees in both medicine and dentistry. He completed a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at Otago University in 2003 and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at University of Auckland in 2009.

    After completing his surgical training, Frank went to the UK for further sub-specialty post fellowship training in Temporomandibular Joint surgery. Frank also received advance specialist training in adult and paediatric deformity surgery and head and neck oncology surgery.

    Frank works in private practice in South Perth.

    Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon

    Dr Lee Kaing is a dual-qualified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon. She completed a Bachelor of Dentistry with Honours in 2005 and a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 2011 from The University of Melbourne, along with a Postgraduate Diploma in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery. She obtained specialist training in Victoria and Western Australia.

    Lee has worked at hospitals in Perth, Melbourne, Hobart and Canberra and gained international experience at Oxford University Hospitals in the UK.

    Dr Kaing works in a private practice and is a Consultant Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon at Royal Perth Hospital. She teaches medical students and is involved in training the next generation of oral maxillofacial surgeons.
