Join us for another great CPD session with a great lunch so we can catch up, relax and mingle.

2021 has been challenging, and everyone deserves some rewards at the conclusion of the year. Our CPD speakers are still being finalised and our planned topics will cover pharmacology, oral pathology and periodontics.

We will also be announcing the 2021 winner of the Tammie Birch Inspirational Award.

Program Synopsis

Medications Affecting Oral Care in the Older Population

It is well known that oral health in aged care is a challenging area that has been neglected, impacting on the nutrition, mental health, quality of life and exacerbating many chronic medical conditions and pain. The older population often take many medications for both chronic and acute conditions that may impact on their oral health. This presentation outlines issues and practical tips for oral health practitioners and pharmacists to collaborate to support the older population.

Learning Objectives:

  • Outline common medication classes used by older people for their chronic medical conditions
  • Summarise major side effects of these medications that may impact on oral health
  • List practical strategies that an oral health practitioner may apply to manage these side effects
  • Describe ways that pharmacists and oral health practitioner may collaborate to improve the health and wellbeing of older Australians. This may include the range of products and services available through community pharmacies for self-care.

How to Recover from the Great Recession – Dr Hugh Lenehan

The classification of mucogingival defects, aetiology of gingival recession as well as when to treat a recession defect. Build your understanding about treatment objectives and options regarding gingival defects.

General Mucosal Pathology & Temporomandibular Joint Disorders – Dr Ragu Krishnamoorthy

TMJ disorders are common chief complaints of patients during routine examinations. This program will delve into what causes TMJ disorders, management of the disorder, definition, epidemiology and classification. We will also revise TMJ examination, myofascial pain, history/exam features and anatomy/pathology.

  • Summarise TMJ hypo/hyper mobility
  • Describe TMJ arthritides
  • Describe and classify myofascial pain
  • Management of condyle resorption & TMJ cysts/tumours

    Associate Professor Sam Kosari

    B.Pharm(Hon), PhD

    Sam Kosari is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy and the course convener for the Master of Pharmacy at the University of Canberra. Sam worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Melbourne and moved to the University of Canberra in 2015. Sam is a registered pharmacist with medication review accreditation and has been involved in different aspects of pharmacy practice including community pharmacy, managing, aged care services, locum, pharmacotherapy, and medication review.

    Dr Hugh graduated from Sydney University as a general dentist before perusing further studies in the field of periodontics. He has been working in Canberra as a periodontist since 2017 and currently works in private practice at a specialist periodontics and dental implant clinic. His special interests include gingival grafting and implant technologies.

    Dr Ragu Krishnamoorthy

    MBBS, BDSc, PGDipSurgAnat, FRACDS

    Dr Ragu Krishnamoorthy is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, specialising in treating a wide range of conditions of the mouth, face, teeth and jaws. He has extensive training and highly specialised skills in oral surgery, having qualified as a surgeon, a doctor, and a dentist. He has extensive experience in all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, particularly concentrating and consolidating his skills in orthognathic, facial trauma reconstruction, all aspects of dentoalveolar and implant surgery. He obtained his dental degree at University of Queensland, and subsequently completed his medical degree at Australian National University. He was selected into the surgical training program and trained in various tertiary hospitals all over Australia.
