Event Details

This course will provide general dentists with the theory and practical skills to confidently treatment plan currently available ceramic systems in their day-to-day practice.

Course Objectives

Understand differences between currently available ceramic systems including:

  • chemical composition
  • laboratory construction (pressed and milled)
  • mechanical properties
  • use as layered or monolithic
  • colour

Understand limitations of currently available systems including:

  • modes of failure
  • treatment of the vital broken-down tooth
  • treatment of the endodontically treated tooth

Understand basic preparation guidelines for ceramics and relevance for currently available systems:

  • differences between leucite-reinforced, zirconia, and lithium disilicate
  • differences for layered vs monolithic
  • considerations for anterior vs posterior preparations

Understand handling of the ceramic restoration:

  • temporisation
  • try in
  • cementation (including treatment of the fitting surface)
  • polishing

    Dr Gerry Clausen is a registered specialist prosthodontist who has a private practice in Collins Street. He has a BDSc, LDS and MDSC from the University of Melbourne where he also continues to teach at the specialist level. Gerry has lectured extensively throughout every state of Australia, has run advanced and basic level implant programs in New Zealand and Australia and given lecture programs in China and America. He has been involved in table clinics, lectures and live patient treatment in ADA Dental Congresses from 1985-1998. He is actively involved as a reviewer of textbooks, research applications and articles for publications for the ADAJ, The ADRF and the ADAVB and is a member of numerous societies and committees.

    Dr Gordon Burt

    BDS (Lond), LDS RCS Eng, MS (Minnesota), MSc (Lond), FRACDS, MRACDS (Pros), FADI

    A Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Dr Gordon Burt is a visiting specialist to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he treats patients with acquired maxillofacial defects. He is a demonstrator for the Melbourne Dental School, DCD prosthodontic program. He is also an examiner for the RCS Edinburgh Diploma in Implant Dentistry. He is the current secretary/treasurer of the Academy of Australian and New Zealand Prosthodontists.

    Specialist Prosthodontist

    Dr Jamie Foong is a specialist prosthodontist who works in private prosthodontic practice in Collins St, Melbourne. He undertook his undergraduate dental degree at the University of Melbourne and then worked as a general practitioner in a Brisbane prosthodontic and general practice for several years. He then returned to Melbourne and completed a specialist degree in Prosthodontics. Jamie has a keen interest in implant technology and ceramics. As part of his thesis for his doctorate, he investigated the mechanical properties of zirconia and titanium implant abutments. Jamie is involved in teaching at the University of Melbourne Dental School and is a visiting lecturer and clinical supervisor.

    Kunal Pandya completed his undergraduate dental training at the University of Queensland in 2002. He worked in general practice for four years, prior to commencing specialist Prosthodontic training at the University of Melbourne. Now as a specialist prosthodontist in Collins st Melbourne, Kunal has a focus on conservative & aesthetic dentistry and enjoys sharing this philosophy both in his involvement with CPD courses as well as teaching on the prosthodontic post graduate program at the University of Melbourne.
