Overview of Pain Management in Dentistry
Join Dr Steven Parker for dinner and discussion at the South Coast Division Study Group meeting on Thursday 4 August 2022 at 6:30pm.
Pain control is central to enabling clinicians to provide dental treatment and to reduce the suffering of patients. In the last century, there has been a tremendous increase in our understanding of pain and how it is mediated. This has progressively led to the availability of a wider range of techniques and drugs to minimise or eliminate pain.
This brief talk will revise: What pain is; how do we feel pain and what drugs and techniques are available to us to assist our patients including analgesics and local anaesthetics.
Your registration fee includes dinner and drinks. Registration from 6pm and dinner at 7pm.

Course Outline:
This course comprises lectures, demonstrations and hands-on components.
Clinical endodontic procedures can be technically difficult at times. However, with a good understanding of the technical procedures,
it is possible for general dental practitioners to perform root canal treatment on the majority of teeth.
As part of understanding the technical procedures, it is essential to also know and understand the various instruments and materials
that are used. There are many, many choices of instruments, materials and techniques, so it can be confusing and difficult to decide what to use. The first secret is to keep things simple and choose a “package deal” – that is, choose instruments that match the materials and the technique.
This course will outline simple techniques for the major stages of root canal treatment – starting with initial canal negotiation, followed by working length determination, canal preparation and root canal filling techniques. Participants will then be able to practise these techniques by doing the hands-on practical exercises on extracted teeth.
The main objective of this course is to prepare general practitioners for an immediate improvement in their technical skills and ability to perform root canal treatment.

Event Details
In the era of modern dentistry, we are seeing ageing patients retaining a heavily restored dentition for longer. Bruxism is a common outcome due to the ever-increasing stresses of a fast-paced life. These and many other factors result in cracks forming within teeth.
The general dental practitioner is often required to diagnose, restore and maintain a tooth or teeth that have been cracked,
This one-day multidisciplinary lecture will discuss the diagnosis and management of this often complex clinical situation as well as outcomes that can be expected and how to best inform patients.
The lecture will be a case-based discussion delivering information relevant to treatment planning and restoration of these teeth that is immediately translatable to a general dental clinical setting.
Topics include
Etiology and types of cracks
Diagnosis:
- History taking
- Clinical signs and symptoms of cracks
- Clinical Examination
- Radiographic examination and findings including 3D imaging
- Use of illumination and magnification
Endodontic considerations
- The response of the pulp to cracks
- Bacterial ingress and crack propagation
- Minimal access and conservation of tooth structure
Restorative considerations
- Modern restorative philosophies for restoring cracked teeth
- Restorative techniques and trouble shooting.
Learning Objectives
- Become confident in the diagnosis of cracks
- Pain management and symptomatic relief
- Restorative plans for cracked teeth
- When is endodontic treatment required.

Outline
Endodontics has progressed in leaps and bounds both practically and scientifically over the past 30 years that I’ve been in practise. However there are still some legacy “beliefs” which many accept without intellectually challenging these against current scientific evidence.
We will review several commonly accepted endodontic dogmas and the currently available scientific evidence which might support or refute these.
Objectives
- identify common routinely accepted endodontic dogmata
- present updated scientific evidence for or against these practises self assess if we need to modify our beliefs or practise of modern endodontics

COURSE OVERVIEW
New standards are emerging to provide a more holistic approach to endodontic therapy. Greater importance is being placed on a process that can not only enable the successful elimination of infection within the root canal system but one that is also considerate of the structural integrity of the tooth to provide the most favourable long-term outcome. A component of this is the improvement in material science that has facilitated the manufacture of more flexible and strong instruments.
This endodontic seminar and hands-on workshop will give participants the opportunity to develop the skills to prepare and obturate more conservatively using the latest technology heat-treated files. The majority of the workshop will be spent preparing and obturating teeth. A component of online learning will be necessary prior to the hands-on workshop.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, the participant will:
- Understand the limitations and advantages of implementing orifice directed access in your practice
- Developed the able to utilise new NiTi technology in conjunction with traditional hand file techniques to achieve specific canal-appropriate instrumentation with reduced risk of iatrogenic error
- Understand the use of bioceramic sealers and warm lateral condensation techniques to fill canal preparations

Event Details
Overview
This course aims to guide practitioners through the clinical decisions to restore endodontically-treated teeth using contemporary materials and using either an analogue or a digital workflow. This will have a direct impact on your clinical success and survival rates. Endodontic therapy is carried out regularly in everyday dentistry, but a satisfactory restoration after the completion of the root canal treatment is not only mandatory, but also critical to the overall success of the treatment. A pulpless tooth requires a restoration that conserves and protects the remaining tooth structure. Although there are a variety of materials and techniques described for restoring pulpless teeth, the prognosis of these teeth relies mainly on the understanding of biomechanical principles.
The course is structured in two parts, a series of online lectures covering post material selection, pattern-resin post preparation, partial posterior indirect restorations of different materials and designs as well as adequate cementation techniques. The online lectures will be structured in modules, each with an assessment at the end.
Part two consists of a full day face-to-face hands-on pre-clinical component to apply all the principles learnt online. Participants pre-clinical work will be assessed by the presenters and direct feedback provided.
Participants can choose to do either (1) the online modules on their own or (2) both the online modules and the hands-on session. Please note the hands-on session cannot be completed on its own.
Program Delivery – Online Blended Learning and Hands-on Pre-clinical session
- Online web lectures via Learning Management System, Canvas.
- A short assessment after each online module to cement your knowledge on the lecture topics.
- Online Live Q&A Session for follow up questions and interaction with the presenters.
- Hands-on Pre-clinical lab session.
Major Topics
- Post or no-post
- Pattern-resin post construction for casting post-cores
- Partial posterior indirect restorations of different materials and designs
- Cementation of Glass ceramic partial posterior indirect restorations
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of the program participants should be able to:
- Distinguish the need for posts in different clinical scenarios
- Record post space with pattern resin for cast post and cores
- Prepare partial posterior indirect restorations and endo crowns using different materials
- Appropriately select materials and cementation techniques for partial posterior indirect restorations.
- Follow all the steps required to successfully bond a glass ceramic restoration

Since 2009 Steve, Dr Rick Spencer and Ms Barbara Faulkner have conducted microscope courses for general practitioners. These courses have continued annually since 1998 and 2009 respectively. Steve also does hands on microscope training on an individual basis in dentist’s rooms on request.
Dr Cohn also presents “hands on“ clinics on rubber dam utilisation with Dr Rick Spencer and Ms Barbara Faulkner emphasising rubber dam application in both endodontics and general practice. Steve has also made a rubber dam training video for the ADA (NSW Branch) CPD.Dr Cohn has also maintained a long interest in dental radiology. He was a consultant to the Dunvale and Rinn corporations and assisted with developing both the Rinn DS and DS Endo devices. He solely designed both the Snapex (1979) and TruView (2017) radiography systems, both specifically designed to be used with all endodontic and restorative procedures carried out under rubber dam. Steve regularly conducts “hands on” radiology workshops throughout Australia. Until recently Dr Cohn was a Federal ADA Media Advisor responsible for the development and delivery of educational content for the dental profession.
