ADAVB
The Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (ADAVB) is the professional association of Victorian dentists. We aim to improve the dental health of all Victorians, promote the highest standards of professional dental care and enhance the professional lives of our members. We support and advocate on behalf of dentists to build a stronger voice for our profession and to promote the oral health of Victorians. We listen to the concerns of Victorian dentists, monitor the impacts on our profession and focus on the priorities identified by our members.

Event Details
Learn how to optimise the outcome of removable complete and partial prostheses.
In today’s population, the removable prostheses remain a valid treatment option for replacing missing teeth. Removable prostheses are unique as they replace multiple missing teeth and supporting tissues, improve patient chewing and speech, and restore the patient’s appearance. However, the success of the removable prosthesis is largely dependent on its design and the standards of clinical steps.
Learn the critical steps for a successful, functional, comfortable and aesthetic denture; and receive updated knowledge and understanding on removable prosthodontics.
Explore:
- Case selection
- Consequences of wearing a removable prosthesis (as an introduction to how we can optimise the outcome)
- The clinical considerations to optimise the outcome of a removable prosthesis (complete and partial), including the aesthetic, biological and functional principles
- Principles of designing a removable prosthesis
- Critical steps that influence dentures outcome (complete and partial)
- Problems solving.
This webinar is part one in a series of three courses exploring removable prosthesis. Book for parts two and three:

Hear three specialists present on planning for complex cases, followed by a live Q&A discussion.
Comprehensive endodontic treatment planning
Presented by Dr Averil Tse
With recent advances in endodontic armamentarium, increasingly more teeth with complex treatment needs are able to be managed, to help more of our patients maintain their teeth for longer. How can we best embrace current technology to help achieve this goal? How do we avoid common pitfalls?
Learn how to:
- More accurately assess the degree of endodontic case difficulty
- Recognise when advanced imaging techniques and investigations are required
- Understand some of the features of different instrumentation systems and which are best suited for challenging endodontic cases.
Planning for perplexing periodontics
Presented by Dr Andrei Locke
Many unique host factors drive the pathophysiology of periodontics, gingival recession and peri-implants. Clinical management options are ever broadening; however, this gives greater choice and therefore demands more discretion in application to each individual. This presentation will look at some complex presentations and dissect the factors that aid selection of appropriate treatment choices for each case. You will learn how to identify key determinants driving appropriate periodontal treatment planning decision-making in complex clinical cases.

Event Details
Explore the theory and practical steps of complete and partial removable prosthodontics.
For several years, many patients have benefited from removable prostheses, such as complete and partial dentures. Although the incidence of tooth loss has declined markedly in the last few decades, dental clinicians still encounter patients in need of missing teeth replacement. In today’s population, removable prostheses remain a valid treatment option for replacing missing teeth. Removable prostheses are unique, as they replace multiple missing teeth and supporting tissues, improve patient chewing and speech, and restore patients’ appearance. However, the success of the removable prosthesis is largely dependent on its design and the standards of the clinical steps.
This refresher course will simplify removable prosthodontics, focusing on the critical steps for providing a functional, comfortable and aesthetic denture. Update your knowledge and understanding of removable prosthodontics, optimise your skills to increase your scope of practice to include removable prosthodontics, and comfortably manage patients with complete and partial edentulism.
Held over two days, this course is clinically oriented and will cover the theory and practical steps of complete and partial removable prosthodontics. A group of prosthodontists experienced in removable prosthodontics will present lectures on critical aspects for successful removable prostheses followed by hands-on exercises.
Major topics:
- Treatment planning for completely and partially edentulous patients
- Clinical steps for removable prostheses
- Partial denture design
- Complete denture clinical steps
- Immediate denture
- Impressions
- Denture occlusion
- Teeth arrangements
- Implant overdenture introduction.
Learn how to:
- Evaluate and plan the removable prosthodontic treatment for completely and partially edentulous patients
- Understand the minimal requirements of denture impressions
- Design partial dentures
- Perform teeth set-up
- Solve common denture problems.

Learn how to give evidence-based answers to your patients’ questions about oral hygiene products and fads.
‘Floss the teeth you wish to keep.’ We’ve all heard the phrase, so why is daily oral hygiene such a pain in the tooth?
Plaque bacteria is undeniably our biggest enemy when managing dental disease. From charcoal toothpastes, to oil pulling, to bamboo toothbrushes, there is an abundance of different oral hygiene fads on the market. It can become overwhelming to keep up with what works. Our role as dental professionals must be to provide evidence-based advise to our patients while understanding their individual risk profile.
Learn how to:
- Discuss plaque as a primary etiologic agent in oral disease – what do we know about oral dysbiosis?
- Understand market advances in oral hygiene products to provide ‘site-specific’ oral hygiene instruction
- Recognise your patients’ ability to perform oral hygiene and how that relates to their risk profile
- Correctly formulate oral hygiene routines and recall intervals for your patients.

Learn how to optimise the quality of your clinical photographs, and enhance documentation and communication with patients, peers and consumers.
You have got a fancy camera in your clinic – but do you really understand how it works to optimise the quality of your clinical photographs and enhance documentation and communication with patients, peers, and consumers?
Learn the basics of exposure values, camera operation, and how to select or set-up the camera and lens to optimise clinical photography. The ability for images to be captured, uploaded and reviewed is more efficient than ever, and allows us to communicate and document in a way that explanations can’t.
The webinar is aimed at those dentists who have a clinical camera or are looking to purchase one and want to understand the basics of how to use and operate it in a clinical environment.
You will learn:
- The parameters of exposure and image capture
- The basic operation of the camera, image capture and lens types
- How to apply your knowledge of camera operation to clinical photography in the dental environment
- Tips for taking quality images for patient/peer/laboratory communication, and of treatment and orofacial conditions.

Event Details
Be guided through the principles of aseptic technique, receive a demonstration and practise the key concepts of aseptic technique for procedures performed under local anaesthetic*.
Have you identified your high-risk procedures and developed an appropriate aseptic technique protocol?
We know the more invasive a procedure is, the greater the risks. However, it is not practical or necessary for all invasive procedures to be performed in an operating room type environment. Aseptic technique in theory and practice is scaled to reduce the risk to patients who are undergoing varying degrees of invasive procedures.
Explore the options of your current surgery layout, and develop a plan and protocol to implement routine and surgical aseptic techniques. Practise waterless surgical hand-scrubbing, gowning and gloving, and maintaining a sterile field, including the use of implant kits and handpieces.
Experience a truly practical session and conclude confident that you are well on your way to consolidating this practice.
You will learn:
- The risks associated with invasive procedures and determining the appropriate aseptic technique
- Surgical hand hygiene technique options
- Surgical gowning and gloving techniques
- The importance of preparing for and ensuring support during surgical procedures
- How to establish and maintain an aseptic field for routine procedures, e.g. extractions
- How to establish and ensure a sterile field is maintained for surgical procedures
- The importance of the equipment manufacturer’s instructions for use
- Waterless surgical hand-scrub techniques
- Surgical gowning and gloving
- Safe removal of surgical attire and other personal protective equipment
- How to prepare for a surgical procedure and the equipment for reprocessing.

Event Details
Receive tips about communicating with patients, restorative techniques and post-operative pain.
Communication may be the simplest way a new graduate dentist can increase their patient satisfaction
Presented by Dr Toni Surace
What I wish I knew about patient communication when I was a new grad! Communication is EVERYTHING! It doesn’t matter how good a clinical dentist you are if you cannot communicate well.
In this session, you will:
- Discover the secret to building value for your patient to keep returning
- Learn how to instantly build rapport
- Master the art of catering to your patients individual communication
Restorative techniques
Presented by Dr Alan Solomon
They say you can’t teach new tricks to an old dog. But, the old dog often knows a thing or two about the old tricks! Restorative dentistry is largely predicable but we all get problems that bedevil our best efforts, which can leave us scratching our heads for an answer. We will walk you through some areas that can lead to patient dissatisfaction with our restorative attempts, and provide some remedies and ways to avoid them altogether.
Learn how to:
- Recognise why a restoration that we think is acceptable may be deficient in a patient’s eyes
- Identify contact point issues and how to manage them
- Recognise what a ‘functional’ open contact is and options to manage it
- Recognise potential problems before you restore the tooth so the patient is pre-informed and not surprised.
Post-operative pain: Causes of post-op pain and discomfort for common dental procedures, and current recommendations for pain management
Presented by Dr Michael Yoon
Is post-operative pain preventable? Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Know how to predict, prevent and manage post-operative pain to reduce your stress.
Post-operative pain is a part of dentistry. If not managed appropriately, it can develop into a stressful situation for both the patient and the dentist. Understanding the causes of dental pain can help clinicians predict what treatments may result in post-operative pain. Having this foresight will give you the opportunity to start pain management before the patient leaves the practice. Management may come in the form of communication, pharmacology and/or active treatment.
Learn how to:
- Understand the causes of pain
- Identify cases/treatments that are likely to induce post-operative pain
- Apply various pain management strategies.

Feel confident providing adhesive dentistry
Presented by Dr Kunal Pandya
There are complexities and nuances involved with provision of ceramic and other bondable restorations.
You will learn:
- The correct application and indications for ceramic restorations
- How to confidently apply preparation and cementation principles.
Inserting crowns and bridges can sometimes be a stressful procedure – why make it any more difficult?
Presented by Dr Bevan Chong
Tooth-borne crowns and bridges comprise a sizeable proportion of fixed prosthodontic treatment provided by most dental practitioners. The ability to deliver these restorations in a stress-free manner not only makes life easier for the practitioner, but also for the patient and technician/ceramist. This presentation will cover record-taking at the time of tooth preparation, inspection of crowns/bridges upon their return from the laboratory, clinical inspection of crowns/bridges prior to their insertion, as well as tips to make insertion of crowns/bridges a less stressful procedure.
You will learn:
- What records are required at the time of tooth preparation to ensure the technician/ceramist is able to provide the prescribed restoration
- What features of crowns and bridges need to be reviewed when receiving them from the laboratory
- The clinical steps involved in checking laboratory work, and if necessary rectified prior to insertion
- How to use different cementation techniques depending on the type of restoration being inserted.
Implant crowns
Presented by Dr Simon Wylie
Implant crowns can cause headaches on the day of crown insertion, often disappointing patients from an aesthetic perspective and frustrating clinicians when things don’t go well. There are some unique challenges to implant supported crown delivery.
The perfect delivery of an implant crown is probably a rare event and the art of delivering implant crowns is to minimise the complications that can occur, and to reduce the day-to-day stress in clinical practise. As implant hardware has evolved, there are tips and tricks that can help to identify where any misfits are coming from. Conventional crown and bridge have always presented challenges on the day of crown delivery. Implant crown insertion has a whole new range of potential issues unique to this concept of restoration. Explore some of the more frequent issues to help identify problems and sort them in a logical way.
Learn how to:
- Identify unique issues of implant crowns
- Attempt to get a chronological checklist for insertion procedures
- Identify the risks and the ‘bewares’
- Be confident with implant crown delivery.
